It is a truth universally acknowledged that a single male goldfinch, in possession of great beauty, must be in pursuit of a mate.
That beautiful pursuing male is also, like the vast majority of birds, distinctly more colorful than the mate. The yellow is brighter
and more abundant, and in all three of the species found in North America the males have a black cap which the females lack.
